If I needed 5G for events and pop-ups

Card payments, ticket scanning, streaming and staff Wi-Fi at an event or pop-up: the portable 5G setup I would bring, and how to stay online when the crowd turns up.

The short answer

I would bring a 5G router with dual SIMs on different networks and an external antenna on a short mast, keep payments and ticketing on their own network, and test everything before the gates open, because local mobile networks get congested once the crowd arrives.

The problem

Events go from an empty field to thousands of phones on the same masts in an hour. A connection that tested fine during setup can struggle when it matters.

Payments and ticket scanning failing at the gate is the outcome to avoid at all costs.

Here is what I would do

  1. Test on the day, at the spot Survey where the kit will actually sit, and remember it will be busier later.
  2. Two networks Dual SIM on different networks gives you somewhere to go when one gets congested.
  3. Antenna up high A MIMO antenna on a short mast clears crowds, vehicles and marquees.
  4. Prioritise what pays Put payments and ticketing on their own network or VLAN with priority over public or staff Wi-Fi.
  5. Have a fallback Card machines with their own SIMs and a 5G hotspot in the box give you a plan B.

The kit I would use

  • RouterPortable 5G router or outdoor 5G router

Dual SIM, VLANs and quality of service.

  • AntennaMIMO antenna on a portable mast

    Clear of people and vehicles.

  • Backup5G mobile hotspot

A quick fallback for a single stand or the box office.

What I would avoid

  • Relying on one network at a big event.
  • Public Wi-Fi sharing the same network as card payments.

Questions people ask

Why does the connection get worse when people arrive?

Thousands of phones share the same local masts. A second network and a well-placed external antenna help you hold on.

Can I stream an event over 5G?

Often yes, if upload is tested at the venue. For important streams, use two networks or bonding.

Is a mobile hotspot enough?

For one stand or a small pop-up, often yes. For payments across a whole site, use a proper router.
